Curation of the Munich Dance Biennial DANCE

Since 1987, Munich's dance festival DANCE takes place every other year towards the end of October/the beginning of November. It is characterized by the artistic work of changing curators and is organized by the Department of Cultural Affairs of the City of Munich.

Being an international platform, DANCE is a festival accepted well beyond the region and, together with “Tanz im August”, it is one of only two German festivals for modern dance. In the coming years, the concept of DANCE needs to be further developed in order to promote Munich's image as a city of modern dance.

For the preparation and realization of the festival from 2012 on, we are now looking for a curator who will develop and implement a meaningful festival program and who will cooperate with a network of international curators and institutions. The program to be developed should reflect current international trends in modern dance and should include a multi-discipline approach.

The City Council of the City of Munich is expected to come to a final decision on the curation by the end of 2010.

Application Requirements:
• very good knowledge of national and international modern dance and culture
• highly professional skills and long- standing experience in drafting festival concepts and in organizing such festivals in project management, budget management and cost-efficient
working
• English in speech and writing

What we expect:
We are looking for a person committed to his/her work offering a strong curational profile and profound knowledge of modern arts. We would expressly appreciate targeted networking with institutions, actors and topics in and around the field of dance in Munich which would be beneficial for long-term quality management and would also attract a growing audience.

The curator must be capable of creating a communication center during the festival and of being its host making contact with the industry and other institutions for sponsoring purposes as well as of maintaining and developing
these contacts. In addition, cooperation with Munich's Department of Cultural Affairs in all fields is indispensable.

Financial Means:
The festival will be drafted and organized by a freelancer on a fee basis. Based on our experience, a total amount of ca. € 300,000 will be available for realizing the festival program (artists' fees, travel and hotel expenses, transportation costs, rights, etc.). A total of around € 200,000 will be available for running costs and the costs for realizing the event (organization, press and public relations, event technology, etc.) and rooms in the locations Gasteig and Muffatwerk will be available for rent. The festival will be organized and managed financially by Spielmotor München e.V.
We expect the curator to attract considerable third-party funds for increasing the total budget. The budget plans for the festivals from 2012 on are preliminary and are subject to the decisions of the City Council on the City of Munich's annual budget.

What your application should include:

• A detailed draft concept for the festival from 2012 on, based on the framework conditions mentioned above (incl. a rough budget calculation)
• Proposal for a programmatic guideline
• Proposals for possible cooperations and partnerships with regard to specific parts of the program
• Proposals for attracting third-party funds
• C.V.
• Summary of past projects (max. 10pages)
