What are the current subjects, dramatic compositions, and aesthetics of children’s theatre? The Play Young International Symposium discusses the qualitative, aesthetic, and content-related demands of dramatic works and performance practices for an audience from the age of six.
We have structured Play Young as an international workshop congress in which the main focus is the exchange between participants.
Discussions take place in the form of podium discussions, and most of all in work groups, where the experience of individual participants matters. Play Young gathers impetus from experts of connecting genres such as film, television, children’s literature, children’s books illustrations, as well as science, and in doing so intensifies the concern for questions posed by today’s makers of children’s theater.
Play Young takes place during the 2010 Theater der Welt Festival in Mülheim/Essen. The symposium is closely aligned with the theater-practice labs on children’s theater presented courtesy of the artistic program Akademie für Generationsübergreifendes Sehen (Academy for Inter-Generational Vision), for which the ITI Germany has invited to Mülheim international theater artists such as Claudia Castellucci, Richard Maxwell, and Peter Licht. During a weeklong theater laboratory, these artists investigate storytelling modes for children, and their presentations as well as a podium discussion detailing their experiences open Play Young.
