TANSSI/DANCE – Exhibition on Finnish Art Related to Dance opens in Shanghai on September 23, 2010. The exhibition, on show at the Downstream Garage, is a part of the new Dance & Media -festival. In addition to the exhibition, the festival features two live performances from Finland. The exhibition is open until October 17, 2010.
The exhibition TANSSI/DANCE presents contemporary video and interactive media art and photography, dealing with dance and movement.
Contemporary dance and media arts have developed hand in hand in the last twenty years. The artists selected to the exhibition represent different generations: Reijo Kela, Kati Åberg, Jyrki Karttunen, Hanna Haaslahti, Hanna Brotherus, Elina Brotherus, Aurora Reinhard, Ari Tenhula. They are also artists whose concerns have always exceeded the obvious.
During the opening week of the exhibition two solo pieces from Finland are seen at Downstream Garage. Both combine dance and media in their own unique way.
Vera Nevanlinna dances her adaptation of Deborah Hay’s choreography News on September 24 at 8 pm. In News sound designer Tuomas Norvio creates special soundscape by amplifying the live sounds of Vera’s paper dress.
In Sari Palmgren’s choreography Animal Motion the stage is transferred into a research field for dance and video, art and science, (wo)man and animals. Video and lighting design are by William Iles. Animal Motion is performed on September 25 and 26 at 8 pm.
Other Finnish activities during the festival include artist talks after performances, contemporary dance workshop by Sari Palmgren, lecture on Finnish Dance Scene and lecture on photographing dance.

Empirical dance of behavior and brains combining dance, video and science
Animal Motion is choreographed description on movement of man and other animals. Communication trough movement is inherited charasteristic also amongs humans; learned behaviour is seen also amongs other animals. Stage is transferred into a research field for dance and video, art and science, (wo)man and animals.

Sari Palmgren (1976) has graduated with MA degree in choreography from the Finnish Theatre Academy's department of dance in 2004. Since then she has been working as a freelance-dancer and choreographer.

News is a solo adaptation of Deborah Hay's choreography News. Maria Duncker has made the costume out of paper and Tuomas Norvio has made the sound design of the piece by amplifying the live sounds of the dress.

Vera Nevanlinna (b. 1972) has graduated as a dancer with M.A. from the Department of Dance, The Theater Academy of Finland in 1998. Since then she has been working as a freelance-dancer and a -choreographer and has taken extra studies in dance in New York with Rosane Chamecki & Andrea Lerner, Miguel Gutierrez, Barbara Mahler and Sara Pearson & Patrik Widrig among others. Nevanlinna is the artistic Director of Zodiak – Center for New Dance (Helsinki).
