Kannon Dance, a dance school and center based in St. Petersburg organises a two day festival for Finnish dance. Look @ Dance Finland’s program presents Compañía Kaari & Roni Martin’s Anna Karenina and Susanna Leinonen Company’s Nasty at the new stage of Alexandrinsky Theatre on 1-2 December.

Susanna Leinonen Company’s Nasty is a strikingly topical work that centers on the expectations, limitations and attacks targeted at our bodies. Leinonen and her ensemble, a group of five female dancers, examines bodily limits, as well as how constantly being looked at and under conflicting demands and expectations shape the female body and experience.

As well as Nasty, also Compañía Kaari & Roni Martin’s Anna Karenina brings a strong female character to the stage of Alexandrinsky. Compañía invites the audience to share a meal at Count Karenin’s festive table. A doomsday orchestra plays the last waltz under the gleam of crystal chandeliers. Ice sculptures melt away on trays. A bear dances. Love will not be our saving grace.

“In St.Petersburg, we wanted to show new pieces from Finland. Susanna Leinonen’s Nasty touches upon social topics related to the position of women in modern society. Compañía Kaari & Roni Martin’s unexpected reading of the novel Anna Karenina mixes flamenco, modern dance and live music totally unique way” says Vadim Kasarov, Director of Kannon Dance. “The performances together with the master classes lead by the choreographers, Finnish dance films and creative meetings will become a new bridge to understanding Finnish dance.”

Anita Parri, the coordinator of Finnish-Russian dance exchange program, is happy that Kannon Dance invited two Finnish dance companies to perform in Alexandrinsky Theater. “Look @ Dance Finland brings two bold and provocative dance pieces to the stage of a state theatre. In Russia, the gender roles are rarely dealt or questioned on the stage.”

Look @ Dance Finland is organised in collaboration between Kannon Dance, Dance Info Finland’s Finnish-Russian dance exchange program, Consulate General of Finland in St. Petersburg.
