The 9th HIBC takes place in the Finnish National Opera and Ballet from 1st to 8th of June 2020. The competition program consists of both classical and modern repertoire. HIBC 2020 will honor the heritage of its founder Doris Laine with the Doris Laine award. Registration for the competitors has started and will end the 17th of January 2020.

Helsinki International Ballet Competition was founded in 1984 by Professor Doris Laine (1931-2018), whose extensive tenure as the prima ballerina of the Finnish National Ballet was followed by a career as a cultural politician and an advocate of dance. Doris Laine first had the idea to establish an international ballet competition in Helsinki while working as a jury member for several ballet competitions. After gaining the necessary backing from the City of Helsinki as well as various cultural funds she was able to carry out her plans.

The new Doris Laine Award worth of 12 000-euro will be donated by the Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation at the 2020 ballet competition. It will be given to a future ballet star chosen by the competition jury.

Application period open until 17th of January 2020
