“On the edge of ruin!” – Statistics from the year 2020 show a huge loss in audience numbers

The dance sector lost 70 percent of spectators because of the covid-19 caused lockdown.

The impact of the lockdown was substantial on the dance sector in Finland and hit especially freelancers whose earnings are modest even in normal conditions.

The Finnish dance companies performed in total 1.500 times in 2020, which is only a half of the numbers of the previous years. These performances were attended by 120.000 spectators in total, which shows a drop of 70 percent compared to earlier years.

Figure: Year 2020 showed a 50 % drop in the number of dance performances compared to earlier years – and even two thirds of audiences were lost.

“On the edge of ruin!” was the often heard comment from the field. Many groups and choreographers had to put their activity on hold. Even if many dance companies put up performances online this wouldn’t compensate the fall of incomes.

The volume of online performances is still modest. Dance films, however, gained a larger audience online compared to live screenings: Finnish dance films had almost 50 000 views online.
