Kemppainen, Nieminen, Peura: and then they left
and then they left is a puddle and an ocean of lies, liquids and truths. It is a watery yet dry magic trick that wants to fall towards an uncategorised space and pleasure.
and then they left looks at Euripides`s ancient Greek tragedy Medea (431 BC) and painter Artemisia Gentileschi’s interpretation of the same myth (1620). The performance is not a new version of Medea; instead it takes and leaves the historical art object and questions narratives that are prevalent within the canon of storytelling.
The play by Euripides is a narrative of the protagonist’s systematic revenge, while for Gentileschi revenge is an artistic choice to alter the positions of power in her paintings. and then they left positions itself in an intergenerational continuum, rerouting the gestures of revenge and solidarity.
