Villa (Wool)

Contemporary dance

A dance installation by dancer-choreographer Pirjo Yli-Maunula will be part of the multisensory and multidisciplinary art exhibition Villa (Wool) in culture centre Valve, Valvegallery, Oulu.

A new multisensory and multidisciplinary art exhibition takes over Valvegalleria in January-February 2019. The exhibition VILLA (Finnish for ‘wool’) consists of sculptures made out of woolen materials, sound, light and a living installation created by a dancer.

The project is a collaboration between choreographer Pirjo Yli-Maunula, costume and set designer Pirjo Valinen, light designer Jukka Huitila and sound designer Aake Otsala. The project is a continuation of the previous material-based work the four members of the core team have created before, namely Susurro and Pessi ja Illusia. The exhibition is the first of a three-part whole, which includes a series of outdoor performances and a piece performed on stage, set to be created later.

Wool as a material has been in human use for millennia. The woolen thread is a bond that connects cultures across time and space, a means for human interaction with harsh and sublimely beautiful nature. The age-old material becomes a counterpoint against the
unethical practices of cheap mass production and the ideology of the dispensable. Wool
has many souls, which the viewer can get to know also through a tactile experience.
The exhibition project team consists also of visual artist Heidi Kesti, photographer and
writer Janne-Pekka Manninen, and graphic designer Tomi Hurskainen. Daniel Nagy’s
charcoal drawing is used in VILLA’s marketing and communication.

The exhibition in Valvegalleria runs January 13th through February 17th, 2019 at 10-20. The opening night us January 12th at 18-20. The dance installation can be seen three times a week.

Free admission.
