Meeting with Yana Klichuk 5.4. in Gobe Art Point (Helsinki)

Meeting with Yana Klichuk April 5th 14:00-15:30 at Globe Art Point, Malminkatu 5, Helsinki

Adelfa Agency in partnership with Cultura Foundation organizes a series of informal meetings with Russian experts and activists in contemporary art and participatory culture.

Current political news from Russia convinces that the authoritarian state monopolizes cultural agenda through setting restrictions and censuring. However, meetings with art and cultural agents might help to see how people in Russian cities find it possible to unite, to evince solidarity, and to resist the pressure. We hope that the meetings allow looking into real cultural life in Russia without media filters.

In 2013–2014 Yana Klichuk was an Education Department coordinator of MANIFESTA’10 in Saint Petersburg. Therefore she speaks as an insider: ”Manifesta 10 found itself in the international spotlight responding to real-time socio-political curves in Russia: annexation of Crimea, Maidan in Kiev and Russian invasion in Donbass region of Ukraine, Russian gay propaganda law, the Olympic Games, the crash of MH17 airplane, the national currency collapse, as well as the Russian import ban on EU products. Several petitions were published in the media, calling for the international boycott of the Russian edition of the nomadic biennial taking place at the State Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg. The talk will touch upon on the challenges of the local and international team setting up a contemporary art biennial in these circumstances”.

After the meeting, at 17:00–18:30 the same date Yana and her colleague David Smeulders, curator of Education at De Appel in Amsterdam, are going to hold a lecture ”Community building as an elixir for arts organizations. Experience of MANIFESTA European Nomadic Biennale and Contemporary art institute De Appel” (in Annantalo).

The lecture does not require registration. However, we ask the participants to kindly confirm if they join the meeting.

Both the lecture and the meeting are held in English (with translation into Russian if needed).
