OPEN CALL: Assembly X Opera Beyond – How a live show can be augmented digitally? – DL 31.5.
The Finnish National Opera and Ballet and the digital culture festival Assembly are calling teams to propose creative technological concepts that take live performance into new heights. This is an invitation to re-imagine the experience of opera performance at the age of omnipresent digitality.
Can you envision how a live show can be augmented digitally? How could you allow the audience members to be immersed into the story itself?
This open call invites you to propose creative technological concepts that take live shows to new heights. Your concept can utilize any new technology or a combination of them to deepen the immersive experience for the audience. The technological concepts can be immersive, pervasive, multisensory, cross-disciplinary, interactive or game based. The concept can be based on audio, video, graphics, motion capture or volumetric video.
Teams can use XR, AI, mapping, game engines, code or whatever technological tools they wish. Teams are allowed to place new items among the seats or concentrate on the main stage. The only criteria is – the concept should enrich the spectacle in ways not experienced before. Please note that concept ideas that can be realised within the auditorium space, as part of the live show.

The competition culminates at Assembly festival in autumn 2021 where the finalists are invited for a stage to pitch and actually show a demo on how they envision their project to come alive.
