8.6.2017

The annual Tero Saarinen Company Summer Intensive course will be held in Helsinki on 21–25 August. The course is a comprehensive introduction to Tero Saarinens movement technique for professionals and advanced level dance students. It includes an in-depth exploration of the holistic philosophy and biomechanics behind Saarinen’s style, plus repertoire exercises.

Led by Tero Saarinen Company’s Head of Artistic Development Sini Länsivuori. A Finland Prize awarded dancer and inspiring pedagogue, Länsivuori is one of Saarinen’s closest collaborators, serving him as teacher, Choreographer’s Assistant and dancer since 1998.

This is the Company’s summer season’s only intensive course – sign-up now! Maximum 20 participants.

In focus: Biomechanics

The August course will focus on the biomechanics behind Saarinen’s movement technique. Tero Saarinen, Sini Länsivuori and Hanna Pohjola (DA (Dance), MSc (Exercise Medicine), PT) have analysed Saarinen’s technique and its central movement patterns, and even explored it via motion capturing. This study will be continued during the summer intensive together with its participants.

About Tero Saarinen Technique

“My goal is to reach a state of awareness where even the skin is curious and alive.”
– Tero Saarinen

The movement technique of internationally acclaimed choreographer-dancer Tero Saarinen stems from awakening the senses, recognising the weight of one’s body and hence maximising the use of both balance and off-balance.

Saarinen’s distinctive style fuses elements from his backgrounds in ballet, contemporary dance and a wide range of Asian traditions. Saarinen’s style has been described as “organic”, ”an inventive mixture of grotesqueness and beauty” and “butoh with wings”.

The aim of the workshops is to activate every cell and nerve ending in the body, to become fully Aware, Awake, Alert and Attentive – 360 degrees present, alive and resonating. The goal is to make full use of each dancer’s technical knowledge and explore, liberate and further nourish the potential of each individual. More info: http://www.terosaarinen.com/en/workshops
