Uniarts Helsinki’s Theatre Academy is recruiting a part-time (50%) lecturer in dance for a fixed-term position for the period of 1 August 2022–31 December 2024.

The Master’s Programme in Dance Performance is recruiting a part time lecturer in dance with experience and knowledge in artistic research and theoretical understanding on performing practices and performance in dance.

The Master’s Programme in Dance Performance is an international, practice-oriented programme in dance with a focus on the dancer’s and performer’s perspectives on the art of dance. The programme focuses on versatile practices and methods of dance performance as well as research within the framework of dance and performance. Studies consist of thematic studies, contextual studies, artistic projects and optional studies.

The programme develops the students’ independent artistry, their deep and critical understanding of the current issues, practices and concepts of dance and performance art as well as of the interactive relationship between art, society and the environment. The studies deepen and broaden students’ skills as dancers and performers, preparing them to take their place in the diverse and ever-changing operating environment of dance art.

The intake of students is 12 students every second year.

Job description

The position of lecturer in dance (50 %) is based primarily in the Master’s Degree Programme in Dance Performance and additionally in the Bachelor’s Degree Programme in Dance at Uniarts Helsinki’s Theatre Academy. The lecturer’s duties consist of research-based teaching and developing the research orientation of the programme, including the planning of the theoretical framework of the studies together with the professor and other teaching staff.

Other duties include teaching in accordance with the curriculum of the degree programme, participation in student admissions, supervision of thesis projects, mentoring of students, possible administrative tasks and development of the degree programme together with the professor and other teaching staff of the programme.

The lecturer is expected to actively follow the field of dance, develop their own artistic, research and pedagogical competence and engage in interaction with the surrounding society and in international contexts.

The position requires periodical presence during the teaching periods on site at Uniarts Helsinki’s Theatre Academy. The teaching periods at Uniarts Helsinki span from the beginning of January to the beginning of May and from end of August to mid-December.

General eligibility and competence requirements

A person selected for a lecturer’s position at Uniarts Helsinki is required to have a master’s degree or equivalent artistic merits, versatile teaching skills and experience in utilising artistic activities and/or research in teaching, as well as pedagogical studies or other evidence of pedagogical competence. Other requirements include strong merits in working in the arts and/or research sector, as well as experience in local or international cooperation and societal influence.

The person selected for the position of lecturer in dance is required to have a master’s degree and the ability to combine theory and practice in their teaching and to be updated of the latest developments in dance.

Applicants’ teaching skills will be assessed based on the available documentation as well as a teaching demonstration of the short-listed candidates. Teaching demonstrations and interviews will take place between 26 April – 27 April 2022 on site at Uniarts Helsinki’s Theatre Academy. In case of force majeure, the teaching demonstrations and interviews can be done online.

Language skills

The languages of instruction at the Theatre Academy are Finnish, Swedish and English. The language of instruction in the vacant position of lecturer in dance is English. Applicants are required to have an excellent command of English. Language skills will be assessed in relation to the duties of the post.


The job-specific salary component will be based on level 5–6 of the requirement scheme for teaching and research positions in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance. The monthly salary at the beginning of the employment (50%) will be approximately 1,600–1,900 euros.
